An hour later, Anna and her uncle were having breakfast at the diner. While Edward was having the works—eggs over easy, baked beans, grilled ham, home fries, and toast—all Anna could stomach was a piece of toast with raspberry jelly and a coffee. She was still hungover.

Nathan had made her drink an entire glass of water with two aspirin before he took his leave, promising to check up on her later. Neither of them mentioned what happened in bed earlier, but the sexual tension between them was unmistakable. A part of her wished that he was with them having breakfast, but the other part was glad for the space. She had spent practically thirty-six hours with him and needed some time to think. It was almost as if she had lost all brain function in his presence, and the only way to fully assess the situation was if he was not nearby. Her brain assessed that she already missed him terribly.

“I like him,” Edward said, looking up from his breakfast. Anna knew he meant Nathan.

Anna had not been up for conversation in the morning with the way she had been feeling, so she and her uncle hadn’t talked much before coming to the diner, but he did tell her about his business trip to Quebec. He was driving up there and took a small detour to come see her. He had left her a voice mail to let her know that he was coming, but she was obviously preoccupied, so he used the spare key she had given him during his last visit—when she arrived home only to find him early and waiting in his car for her—and let himself inside to wait for her. She was glad that at least they had a few hours to spend together today before he got back on the road.

“I like him, too,” she said. She more than liked him, though. She was completely in love with him.

No more was needed to be said about Nathan. Edward’s approval of him was just stated in his simple three words. She had been speaking about Nathan to her uncle almost since she had met him, not even realizing how much until a good deal later. Once in a while, her uncle would be the one to bring him up even if it was to simply ask how things were going. Anna knew he didn’t buy the “just friends” act at all, but he played along.

She did wonder what the two men had talked about last night while she was in her drunken state. After making herself somewhat decent in the morning, she had found them both in the kitchen talking, and then they shook hands as Nathan wished Edward a good trip and told him that he looked forward to seeing him again. Anna was amazed when her uncle responded with a “likewise.”

Anna never sought Edward’s approval when she was with Keith, especially given her uncle’s immediate dislike of him. She knew now that it was rightfully so.
